Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., 3.19: “Failed Experiment” (Tuesday, 05/03/16). Warning: Spoilers.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. delved into the creation of the Inhuman Hive this week as Phil Coulson sent a S.H.I.E.L.D. team to kill him.
Holed up in a mostly abandoned oil town in Wyoming, Hive attempts to recreate the experiment that the Kree performed to make him. His intention is to begin transforming any and all humans into Inhumans. I like this plan because it’s different from typical villains who want rule everything or destroy everything. Hive is, at least, trying to create something. Problem is, he needs Kree blood from a living Kree.
So, he sets up the artifact that he and Daisy recovered from James’ outback hideout. It, apparently, acts as a beacon for the Kree.
Meanwhile, back at the Playground, FitzSimmons is trying to cook up an anti-biotic that will counteract Hive’s poison, but to no avail. Lincoln volunteers to have it tested on him. Against the warning of Jemma and the direct order of Coulson, Lincoln injects himself with the anti-biotic and subsequently passes out while frying the computers in the lab. Honestly, Lincoln’s banging his head against the wall to do anything to help the search for Daisy is getting tiresome, and seems to be shoved into the storyline.
On to more important matters: Coulson sends a team headed by Mack and May to the Wyoming town where Hive and his Inhumans are. Their job is simple: kill Hive; if they can’t kill Hive, get out. He explicitly tells Mack that he is not to attempt to rescue Daisy. (But, he’ll try anyway.)
The Kree aliens arrive at the same time S.H.I.E.L.D. finds Hive’s location. Two Kree reapers descend from a “satellite” and begin a march through the town, killing Inhumans. Another of Alicia’s duplicates is killed. (That girl has the worst luck.) Daisy fights one of the Kree and defeats it, handing him over the doctor so he can drain him of his blood.
Meanwhile, the other Kree finds Hive in an abandoned church and attempts to take him out, declaring him a “failed experiment.” The fight between the Kree and Hive is extremely rewarding. Hive is a good fighter, skillful but nor brutish. Even when it seems like he’s getting beaten, he has a passive steeliness that is frightening to watch.
Hive defeats the Kree, and that’s when May and the S.H.I.E.L.D. team move in. Hive is shot with multiple guns, but to no avail. Then, he’s shot with something like a rocket-propelled grenade which tears his shoulder open, but it immediately begins to stitch itself back together. Realizing it’s hopeless, May orders a retreat.
Meanwhile, Mack has located Daisy and is trying to talk her into returning to S.H.I.E.L.D. He thinks he is trying to save her, and she thinks she can save him by convincing him to become an Inhuman and join the Hive. The argument is passionate and moving, but it goes nowhere. Mack uses a splinter bomb to destroy the Kree that Daisy had captured.
This enrages Daisy and she goes after him, first with her quake powers and then by punching him repeatedly. Mack doesn’t fight back, even when Daisy starts crushing his bones. Fortunately, May and her SHIELD team arrive in time to shoot Daisy and rescue Mack.
SHIELD is back to square one — nowhere on defeating Hive, nowhere on rescuing Daisy, nowhere on a cure for the Hive infection.
Meanwhile, Daisy reveals that she actually has Kree blood inside her. Coulson injected her with it way back in Season 1 when he was trying to save her after she had been shot and was on the verge of death.
So, who dies?
The show is serious about someone dying in the finale, but it is giving no clues away as to who that might be. I’d say Coulson, May, FitzSimmon, and, yes, even Daisy are safe. That leaves Mack and Lincoln as the ones most likely to bite the dust. One thing is for certain, the show is crafting powerful, emotional arcs for each character.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs Tuesdays at 9pm EST on ABC. Watch the trailer for the next episode below.
