John Barrowman Hints Malcolm Merlyn Could Bring Vandal Savage Back to Arrow

John Barrowman as Malcolm Merlyn on 'Arrow'

Malcolm Merlyn has been down on his luck recently.

In the current season of Arrow, he got stripped of the title of R’as al Ghul and the leadership of the League of Assassins. Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) chopped off his arm. His already rocky relationship with his daughter Thea (Willa Holland) got rockier. He even stooped so low as to give arch-villain Damien Darhk the name of Oliver Queen’s son whom Darhk promptly kidnapped and used to extort Oliver into dropping out of the Star City mayoral race.

But things are looking up for the Dark Archer once again. With Darhk stripped of his mystical powers and currently in jail, Merlyn has another evil organization, HIVE, within his sights.

John Barrowman, who portrays Malcolm Merlyn, recently talked about what the future looks like for the character.

Regarding a possible takeover of HIVE, Barrowman told Comic Book Movie, “Just know that Malcolm doesn’t have a hand — Malcolm can’t use his bow, so Malcolm has to use Damien as a bow. That’s the way I look at it.” With Darhk in jail, it looks like Merlyn will attempt to use HIVE to re-establish himself as a real power player.

But that’s not all Merlyn has up his sleeve. Barrowman continues, “I can’t tell you anything because things are going to happen. That’s all I can say. Remember Malcolm took some powder? Malcolm has other little things in his stash…”

Malcolm took some powder. I assume he’s referring to the ashes of Vandal Savage which he collected after Teams Arrow and Flash defeated the immortal warmonger during last year’s superhero crossover. I think it’s safe to assume that he wouldn’t have collected them if he didn’t intend on doing something with them.

So, could Malcolm Merlyn bring Vandal Savage back to life in some form and unleash him on Star City?

Anything’s possible.

And while we’re on the subject of Vandal Savage, Barrowman said he’s game for an appearance on Legends of Tomorrow where Savage is the primary villain. He said it would be interesting to portray “a Malcolm Merlyn that is different [than] the present version… What if Malcolm figures out a way through time and lands in the world of Legends and he’s completely different from who he is, meaning he’s either loonier or he’s not the evil, sinister Malcolm. He’s the nuts, freaky Malcolm. That’s my fantasy, but who knows if it will happen.”
