When season 2 of Marvel’s Daredevil premieres, the Punisher will appear to deliver his unique brand of justice in Hell’s Kitchen. And actor Jon Bernthal has opened up about how he went to a ‘dark’ and ‘brutal’ place to portray the iconic antihero.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bernthal said the Punisher is “a guy who brought the war home with him [in] the worst possible way… I had to put myself in as dark of place as possible the last six months.”
The former Walking Dead actor tried to remain as isolated as possible when he first took on the role. “I was taking long walks across the Brooklyn Bridge to the set, trying to shed any outside influence of joy,” he said.
This is a guy who pushes the envelope. He’s brutal, but he’s coming from a place of unbelievable hurt. And the best thing about the character is he just doesn’t care. It’s a highly personal mission he’s on and if he offends you, it’s completely unimportant to him.
Bernthal also said that the second season of Daredevil will be darker than the first.
