For those worried that ABC’s Shadowhunters will be tame, the show’s executive director says, ‘Have no fear.’
Speaking at the Television Critics Association, executive producer Ed Decter said ABC Family (soon to be Freeform) had no problems with the racier content of Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments being included in the upcoming show, Shadowhunters. He told a TCA panel on Saturday, “I said [to ABC Family/Freeform] the show was going to be darker, sexier. It’s got some racy content, and they said, ‘Bring it.'”
Decter also spoke of how Cassandra Clare and her fans acted as an “approval-meter” for many details in the show, for example, whether the character Jace (played by actor Dominic Sherwood) had a British accent or an American one.
The first season of Shadowhunters “generally” covers book 1, City of Bones. (There are six books in The Mortal Instruments series.) However, Decter said, “Some of the things that we have in the story come from Book 6.” The show also “expands” the Shadowhunting world instead of following closely with the perspective of the main character (Clary Fray played by Katherine McNamara), as the books do.
