In the third season of The Flash, Barry Allen will again have to battle a villainous speedster — this time, Savitar.
For fans concerned that the show is getting repetitive — after Reverse-Flash and Zoom being the major baddies in Season 1 and Season 2 — executive producer Todd Helbing offers this assurance:
Savitar is more of a psychological villain in a weird way. I think the Hindu word for Savitar means God of Speed; he’s all about speed. Everything about this guy is different. I can’t go into super detail, but he’s not like Zoom or Reverse Flash.
All of which described both Zoom and Reverse-Flash… in a weird way.
Regarding the rationale behind having Barry’s archnemesis be another speedster, Helbing told IGN:
Yeah, I think in general if you have some of these other meta humans, it gets hard to show how Barry can’t get them. If you have another speedster, especially someone like Zoom, or Reverse Flash, you need somebody on an equal level to provide that threat that a lot of these other metas can’t do.
For those getting speedster villain fatigue, there is another villain who will play a huge role in Season 3 — Dr. Alchemy. While Helbing says Savitar’s and Alchemy’s evil plans “are not much different,” he did say, “when you find out what Alchemy is doing, it sort of provides that ‘holy s**t’ moment that we really love to have on our show.”
The Flash Season 3 premieres on Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at 8pm EST on The CW.
