Jon Bernthal is letting viewers know up front that they may not like his portrayal of the Punisher in Daredevil.
Obviously, this has more to do with Punisher’s unique brand of justice rather than Bernthal’s acting chops in the second season of Netflix’s hit series from Marvel.
In a wide-ranging interview with ComicBookResources.com, Bernthal spoke at length about his take on the character and how he anticipates fans will react. He says he ‘loves’ the fact that after the first two episodes, fans may loathe his character. “They [fans] could just be like, ‘No matter what happens with this man before we know anything about him, his actions in Episode One and Two, I can’t get behind. In this day and age with everything that’s going on, I can’t get behind this man.’ I love that.”
Bernthal said his goal with the Punisher was to put himself “in that darkness and bring it up and again, to never pull punches. To never do half measures. To never be apologetic. To never pursue likability at all. To be completely unapologetic at all times.”
However, he added that by the end of the season, he hopes fans will be able to sympathize with the Punisher. “My goal, and the team’s goal, is to win them back and explain [the Punisher’s motivations] and get that life and fill in the blanks. And whether you can get behind him or not, you sure will understand him. You’ll understand why he’s doing what he’s doing.”
