Lots of people have their fingers crossed for the January 5th premiere of The Shannara Chronicles on MTV (yours truly, among them). First off because fantasy (think Game of Thrones for teens) isn’t really MTV’s forte. Also, The Shannara Chronicles is a bestselling book series, and it’s always hard to please the fans of the books in a page-to-screen adaptation.
The story is based on Terry Brooks’ fantasy novels, the first of which was published in 1977 and the latest of which was published in June 2015. After a chemical and nuclear holocaust that destroys the world, people revert to a pre-industrial state and magic re-emerges to supplement science.
A synopsis of the TV show is below:
An Elvish tree, known as the Ellcrys, is dying. The bad news is that the tree has been the only piece of magic that protects the Four Lands from the Demon World. Amberle Elessedil is the only one who can save the tree. But she has to unlock magic that the Elves haven’t used in thousands of years. With the help of Wil Ohmsford, she travels to find the lost magic. But it won’t be an easy task.
There is no word yet on how closely the TV show will follow the books, but that will likely be subject to debate by fans on both sides.
The film stars Austin Butler as Wil Ohmsford and Poppy Drayton as Amberle Elessedil. Other talent joining the cast include: Ivana Baquero, Manu Bennett, Emilia Burns, and John Rhys-Davies.SuperFable
