***SPOILERS for the March 29th Shadowhunters episode “Malec”***
We all knew Malec was going to happen sooner or later.
The long-hyped relationship between Downworlder warlock Magnus Bane (Harry Shum Jr.) and Shadowhunter Alec Lightwood (Matthew Daddario) was in the cards from the beginning. Although the marriage of convenience between Alec and Lydia Branwell (Stephanie Bennett) threw a monkey wrench in their budding romance, with an episode actually titled “Malec” everyone knew the fan-favorite couple would finally get together.
When the dramatic liplock on the latest episode of Shadowhunters took place, the Shadowhunters fan base breathed a collective sigh of relief. But how that kiss came about didn’t sit well with some fans.
First, Shadowhunters resorted to the tired cliche of getting to the actual wedding and leaving someone standing at the altar. Although Lydia was cool about Alec’s sexuality and ultimately said she wanted him to be happy (with Magnus), that plot twist could be seen coming a mile away.
While it served as a dramatic (for viewers) and shocking (for resident Shadowhunters) ending to the Alec/Lydia storyline, it made Lydia look entirely foolish for engaging in an insincere relationship with Alec in the first place. If she knew Alec was gay, and that an attraction between him and Magnus existed, why on earth would she get in the middle of that? After all, she was the one who said she was committed to following her head instead of her heart.
(To her credit, Lydia seemed to actually like Magnus and showed no bitterness to either him or Alec.)
I really hope this isn’t the end of the story for Lydia. She decided to go back to Idris (being knocked out and robbed of the Mortal Cup notwithstanding). If this is goodbye for her, it will seem as though she was a wasted character used for one purpose: a weak and distasteful plot device.
The season finale of Shadowhunters airs Tuesday, April 5, on Freeform.
