Zendaya — previously cast as the mysterious “Michelle” in Spider-Man: Homecoming — has been confirmed to be playing the role of Mary Jane.
Mary Jane Watson is a long-time love interest of Peter Parker and was played by Kirsten Dunst in the Sam Raimi trilogy.
Neither Marvel nor Sony have officially confirmed the news which was first reported by The Wrap. “At least one recent draft of the script has Zendaya’s character dropping several clues to her identity as Mary Jane, one of the most familiar love interests in the Marvel superhero’s universe,” the site reported.
Zendaya, who starred on Disney’s “Shake It Up!” and “K.C. Undercover,” was cast in March. She plays alongside Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Other characters in the film include: Michael Keaton as the villain Vulture, Donald Glover in an undisclosed role, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, and Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is set to be released on July 7, 2017.
