Star Trek Beyond‘s John Cho has revealed that Hikaru Sulu, the helmsman of the USS Enterprise, is gay.
In the film he is portrayed as being married to a man. They have a young daughter.
According to The Herald Sun, Cho was glad the movie took a nonchalant approach to the portrayal. He said, “I liked the approach, which was not to make a big thing out it, which is where I hope we are going as a species, to not politicize one’s personal orientations.”
The decision to portray Sulu as gay was a nod to George Takei, who played the character in the original 1960s series. He came out later, stating, “If I wanted to work as an actor [at the time] I had to keep it a secret.”
What remains to be seen is whether fans will take to the portrayal as the movie-makers hope — like it’s no big deal.
