Despite being assaulted by critics, Suicide Squad has rocketed to the top of the box office, breaking August opening records along the way.
According to Deadline, as of Saturday morning, “weekend estimates for Warner Bros.’ Suicide Squad have risen to $146 million-plus after a $65M Friday. Combined with the pic’s three-day foreign run of $64.6M, Suicide Squad‘s current global sales stand at $130M.”
Deadline says Warner Bros. deserves praise for their marketing plan for this film. Social media interest has been off the charts. “With a social reach close to 600M across Facebook, Instagram Twitter, and YouTube views, Suicide Squad’s social reach is considered exceptional by RelishMix. The film’s Facebook page in recent days added 80K likes per day, which is off the charts by the social media monitor’s measure.”
Suicide Squad is set to break the all-time opening record for August, which is currently held by Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy (which opened at $94.3 million in 2014).
