A comic strip sneak peek for this week’s Arrow episode indicates that someone will be out in Star City wearing a costume and beating up bad guys as… Black Canary.
But Black Canary’s dead, right?
Not exactly. Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy) is dead, and Thursday’s episode, titled “Canary Cry”, will depict the funeral of one of Team Arrow’s most beloved members.
But who is wearing Black Canary-style get-ups and dishing out “justice you can’t run from”?
Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards) is an easy culprit. But it’s unlikely she transforms from IT girl and CEO to kick-ass vigilante in just a few days. Besides, she’s officially not back on Team Arrow… yet.
So, who is it?
Well, Arrow is introducing a new character to the show this week. Her name is Rebecca, and she is being portrayed by Madison McLaughlin. Rebecca is described as “smart,” “snarky,” and an “escapee of a dangerous cult.” The role comes with a recurring option.
Executive producer Marc Guggenheim said, McLaughlin’s character appears in a “circumstance that is very dependent upon the events of [the last episode aka Laurel’s death]. [Arrow writer] Brain Ford Sullivan pitched a very interesting story involving her character that is something we haven’t done on the show, and is something I don’t think any show has ever done.”
So far, that’s all we know.
We do know that “Rebecca” will be attending Laurel’s funeral, so there’s bound to be some backstory between the two.
Could McLaughlin be the Black Canary of “Canary Cry”? Could this role lead to her eventually being a permanent member of Team Arrow?
